WRITERS BIO

Viktorija Božina (1990) has obtained BA in Croatian language and literature at University of Zadar. Her short stories were published on portals arteist.hr, avlija.me and blacksheep.rs. Viktorija is studying in the USA and she published her first novel 'Turbofolk' in 2018.

LOGLINE of the book

A girl from a small Dalmatian town Benkovac is struggling with harsh economic reality of Croatia and decides to pursue her dreams in USA, discovering her bisexuality on the way.

synopsis of the book / STORY

The novel follows the coming-of-age story of a girl who leaves her hometown Benkovac to study in Zadar. Božina, through her authentic narrative lens, speaks about robbing of deserted Serbian homes, harsh economic reality, politics, local mentality, everyday and nightlife of citizens of Benkovac and Zadar. Evoking current economic and migration events, the main character Amelie, like many other from her generation, goes to live abroad, being perfectly aware that her country has nothing to offer her.

WRITERs statement

The original manuscript was about hundred pages longer and the editor Ivan Vidak and I struggled with a decision about the ending of the novel. We came up with the title thanks to the Rambo Amadeus' song of the same name, which reflects the core of turbofolk, like the novel itself.
